Passengers descended from the Diamond Princess

The first hundreds of passengers tested negative for the new coronavirus have left the ship off the coast of Japan after a 14-day quarantine.

At least 542 passengers and crew on the Diamond Princess have been infected by the Covid 19 virus - the largest cluster outside mainland China.

Passengers have described the difficult conditions of quarantine on board.

Many nations are evacuating their citizens as the infection progresses.

The United States on Sunday evacuated hundreds of civilians and placed them in quarantine. The UK said it expects 74 British nationals to fly to the Diamond Princess "this weekend".

A British couple on board - who were giving regular updates to journalists and via social media - confirmed on Wednesday that they had tested positive for the virus.

According to the latest Chinese figures released on Wednesday, Kovid 19 has killed 2,004 people in China.

There have been 74,185 confirmed infections in mainland China and more than 700 cases in other countries.
