The corona virus has been around for a long time. You too can be affected. You see, coronaviruses are a whole family of viruses, especially infested RNA viruses. We have known about them for over 500 years. Some can cause human diseases while others can cause various respiratory diseases. These viruses have animal repertoires, especially bats called coronaviruses, based on their presence under an electronic microscope, not in Mexican beer. i. Severe acute respiratory syndrome is responsible for the corona virus SARS and ii. Middle East Responsibility Syndrome Coronavirus is responsible for MERS
It helps to look at previous outbreaks to understand what the current outbreak of coronavirus is. SARS originated in China in late 2002, and subsequent global outbreaks have infected 8,000 people, of whom 800 have died but the virus has been transmitted within nine months.
The number of significant outbreaks of SARS was 1. Since 2003 there have been only 3 outbreaks that have started from laboratory study SARS and all of them involved less than 10 people. The animal host is responsible for the original outbreak that has not been identified for sure but it is believed to be either bat when the animal eats it as a delicacy in China, such as the palm civet cat. MERS - First reported in 2012 in Saudi Arabia, unlike SARS which was the single largest outbreak and lost. MERS has seen about 10 or so relatively small outbreaks that were all concentrated in Saudi Arabia in 2015 except in South Korea. They seemed to be the primary host for MERS. Since the arrival of MERS in 2012, there have been 2,500 cases and 850 deaths. MERS is more deadly than SARS.
In both SARS and MERS, contact transmission through the respiratory tract can be either human-to-animal or human-to-human, for example, in close contact with an infected person, which is synonymous with measles or influenza. Healthcare workers were particularly at high risk of infection.
